Genius Hour Week 1

I found it very difficult to find ideas for Genius hours. I even asked my wife for ideas but she also found it difficult. Who knew trying to figure out what you are passionate about was so difficult. It has been so long since I thought about myself and my interest since starting teaching and having 2 very busy boys. I have decided to focus on 3 options: Reading a Spanish book, watching Spanish movies and learning to play the guitar.

  1. Reading a Spanish book

I decided to choose reading a Spanish book because I enjoy reading but haven’t read a Spanish book in its entirety since college. I have not decided what book to focus on. I teach Spanish so I might want to look for a book I can incorporate into my lessons. Finding time to read will be my biggest challenge with my boys doing many summer activities, my grad classes, summer trips etc.

  1. Learning French

Another passion of mine is world languages. I speak Spanish fluently but have always been interested in French. As a language teacher I enjoy learning about other languages and cultures. We have a couple of French teachers and I would love to be able to talk to them at school. My goal is to have a basic conversation with my peers.

  1. Learn how to play the guitar

I have always wanted to play the guitar. Now that my son is learning to play an instrument I would like to be an example to him. I’m well aware of how difficult it may be but I will try to focus on playing one particular song. I have not decided what song to play so that alone will be a challenge. Maybe by the end of this my son and I can’t start a band.

  1. Hi Jose. So which one of the 3 did you end up choosing? I always thought it would be great to be able to play the guitar but never took the time to learn. I too found it difficult to come up with ideas of what to learn new. A language is always a challenge as well for me as I am always insecure about pronouncing something correctly. Learning French would be fun too as it seems like a fun language to me. Good luck to you!

  3. Looking forward to seeing what you chose, my vote is for the guitar. I think it would be awesome to be able to do something with your son!

  4. Hi Jose, I too struggled! I loved playing the guitar and even performed during a school talent show. It was a lot of fun! I am excited to learn more about your adventures!

Genius Hour-Expect Mutiny

This week has been a struggle to find time. We had family come from out of town and I found it very difficult to find time to practice. I had many hiccups this week actually. I decided to do a 7 day free trial on the guitar app I was using and accidently hit a 3 month subscription that cost $75. I am still waiting to see if Apple refunds me my money. Honestly, I would not mind if they do not because it is a very useful app to help me practice my guitar playing.  I also have decided to learn a new song Nirvanas-Come as you are. I found a free lesson on Youtube and that is what I have focused most of my time on. I have gotten pretty good at the first couple of notes but not very consistent. I hope to improve my consistency by next week.  I hope to have a video of me playing some of this song next week. Practice makes perfect.
