Going into this class I had no idea of how complex educational technology is. There were so many small nuances that I never took into consideration. The fact that it involved so many stakeholders blew my mind. Everyone must be involved in educational technology to make it work. I also had no idea how technology has transformed the classroom.
One assignment that I found interesting was the technology and the 21st Century Learning Space Design. Not only because it made me think about my classroom and it’s potential but also it got me drawing again. I imagined my dream classroom and found that a lot of what I was thinking is actually a possibility. Picturing a classroom like a coffee house with an open comfortable floor plan never entered my mind. I have always used the traditional rows and teacher in front concept and found that there is more to a classroom than me preaching in front of them. This has inspired me to talk to my department chair and IT to see if some of these concepts I dreamt up is possible.
I also found the institutional technology plan very eye opening. I have to be honest, at times I found it a bit overwhelming. I was completely out of my comfort zone but found it rewarding at the end. It forced me to look into my school and how technology is run. I have a far better appreciation for our technology department.
What I found most interesting was how detailed the technology plan had to be. This was most apparent when I did the organizational readiness assessment report. The tech department has to take into consideration the laws and regulations of the state and most importantly, in my opinion, the funds they have.
This whole process has been eye opening and very interesting. I have learned that I would not like the responsibility of our tech department. Every decision they make affects not only them but the whole school and all stakeholders. I also have learned to appreciate what they do for us and never take them for granted.
