Introduction Blog Post

Hello everyone,

I look forward to working with all of you. My name is Jose Garcia and I am currently a Spanish Teacher in district 204. I teach Spanish 3 and 4 honors at Waubonsie Valley high school and this will be my 14th year. We have been pretty lucky at WV to provide all the students with a chromebook or as the students call it "chromie".

I have used a wide array of applications, but mainly google. I would like to see what other options I may have that is not google related. I was forced to learn quickly how to create videos and other online video tools during the quarantine but feel like I just scratched the surface. I would like to see how I can develop my skills through these classes.

As a long time soccer coach for WV it would be great to incorporate some technology into my training sessions. I have seen some creative ways to train online and would be interested in how someone can accomplish this.

Finally, I enjoy technology but do miss the one on one communication with my students. Especially with a world language class where verbal communication is essential for fluency. If I can engage my students in a new and exciting way, I am all for it.

  1. Good afternoon Jose!

I was just up in your area this past weekend and think one of my best friends kids will end up going to WV. I also might be coaching soccer next year (assistant coach left and head coach just asked if I'd join the staff because I'm the head boys track coach/help both of us out) with very little experience so any helpful tips would be appreciated. I hope the IHSA lets sports happen next fall! Hope you and your family are enjoying the weather. Good to be with you in class.

  2. Hi Jose!

I pass by WV when I go to work! I teach in 204 at Nancy Young, small world! Also, my minor in college was Spanish and I used it a lot at my first district!

I think it is awesome that you coach soccer my dad used to play when he was little in Greece and we watched it often on tv when I lived at home.

I too feel like I scratched the surface with e-learning and would like to learn more.

Hope you are staying healthy and can't wait to connect more.

    -Len

  3. Hi Jose, I hear ya. I cannot wait to get back into the classroom. Sometimes I can be eager for summer, now I just want to be back in the classroom. I am hoping to find meaningful ways to engage students remotely and I look forward to collaborating with you.

  4. Hi Jose! My son is going into 8th grade, and has played travel soccer for years now, and he really misses his teammates and being out on the field. My husband is from Germany, so we take soccer very seriously in my house! I am sure your players would absolutely love if you were able to do training sessions remotely. Hopefully this class will give you some ideas to do that. Hoping to be back in the classroom (and on the field) this Fall!

  5. Hi Jose! I agree with you! We were all kind of thrown into using a lot of technology during remote learning, but there is still so much to learn - like you said, these few months only scratched the surface. I am looking forward to enhancing my online instructional strategies!

Jose, I'm glad you're willing to learn more about these new technologies. It will be worth your while! Welcome to the course!

  7. Hi Jose,
I am also looking for ways to incorporate technology in my teaching. I am glad that you already have experience using Google, and wish that you can learn about more technology tools in this course, for you to incorporate with your students. I wish I had some experience with Google before this school year. My district is having us use Google Classroom and all the other Google features to teach remotely this school year. I am barely learning how to incorporate all of that into my lessons, hoping that my kindergartners will be able to use then appropriately from home.
Best of luck for you this year and continued success.

Genius Hour-Expect Mutiny

This week has been a struggle to find time. We had family come from out of town and I found it very difficult to find time to practice. I had many hiccups this week actually. I decided to do a 7 day free trial on the guitar app I was using and accidently hit a 3 month subscription that cost $75. I am still waiting to see if Apple refunds me my money. Honestly, I would not mind if they do not because it is a very useful app to help me practice my guitar playing.  I also have decided to learn a new song Nirvanas-Come as you are. I found a free lesson on Youtube and that is what I have focused most of my time on. I have gotten pretty good at the first couple of notes but not very consistent. I hope to improve my consistency by next week.  I hope to have a video of me playing some of this song next week. Practice makes perfect.
